Unit 46 Music Videos

Music Video 1:

Note down which band and which song you looked at
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Californication

1. editing / post-production

Almost the entire video is animated in the style of a video game, but at certain points throughout the video, they switch back to the actual band members preforming the song.

2. mise-en-scene

The band plays their instruments shirtless with the rest of their clothes being black. These profiles are the same in the video game form that they are in.

3. content / peformance

The music video does include the band members preforming the song however its not the main focus of the video.

4. camera shot/angles types

Most of the shots of the band preforming the song are profile close ups and the occasional full band shot. The rest of the video is all animated but almost all of the shots in that animation are tracking shots.

5. narrative

I guess the story behind this video is to show the path, the crazy path, that the bands members have witnessed and experienced.

6. conform / subvert / amplify

(tone of lyrics & music)

I think that the video suits the song quite well, the tone of the song and the lyrics relate to what the music video shows.

Music Video 2:

Note down which band and which song you looked at
Kasabian - Fire

1. editing / post-production

There are some points in the video where it is made to look like some of the camera shots are coming from a security camera, there is a orangey tint/colour correction on the video in the other shots.

2. mise-en-scene

The band members feature in the video, all wearing some what ‘cowboy’ type clothing but in a modern style. All of the characters in the video use guitars in replacement to guns, but they act like guns.

3. content / peformance

They don’t actually show any of the band member’s performance, the video is entirely the story.

4. camera shot/angles types

There are a few tracking shots of some the band members moving about. Most of the still shots are close ups of the characters reactions to the scenario. There are also some establishing shots to set the scene and to make sense of the video.

5. narrative

The band members are all getting ready to rob a bank with their weapons that just so happen to be guitars (guns), I guess this sort of means that there is other ways to take the money than resorting to violence, Kasabian are displaying that they made their money through their performance. The money from the bank also because sheet music.

6. conform / subvert / amplify

(tone of lyrics & music)

The video doesn’t exactly relate to the song, but does have some relevance to some lyrics. Saying that the industry is destructive and they are being killed for their music.

Music video Analysis:

Song 1: Tyler the Creator - IFHY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lDqMx4rmFU
Song 2: Maroon 5 - Payphone ft. Wiz Khalifa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRaWnd3LJfs

Similarities:
  • Story based around a male and a love interest.
  • They involve rapping as well as singing.
  • Both video are around 4 and a half minutes.
  • Both music videos have a storyline that is very clear.

Differences:
  • Tyler the Creators music video includes two songs.
  • There were a lot more scenes/locations in the Maroon 5 video.
  • The story in Maroon 5's video was a lot more complex where as Tyler's Video had the story but was a lot more simplistic.
  • There were a lot more special effects in the Maroon 5 video.
  • In the Maroon 5 video  they used a lot more camera shots.

Andrew Goodwin's Music Video Theory - Dancing in the Distraction Factory:
1. Tyler the creators music video doesn't really display the genre conventions of Hip Hop, Tyler typically likes to place a story to his music videos and it's the same for this video. Tyler made a video directly linked to the story in the song, the colours, characters, actions and setting are almost opposite to the stereo typical Hip Hop video.

Whereas videos like Norf Norf by Vince Staples, shows off the stereotype of Hip Hop artists being harassed by police for associating with gangs.

2. The music video doesn't really objectify women, but it does some what show off how the reaction women get to men that are somewhat obsessed or ones that are over reacting.

In the music video Nothin' but a G thang by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, the show off women from what they perceive them to be or what they want them to be.

3.  The song and the music video link very well, the song is about a love interest that disagrees with his idea's of love, the video is exactly the same, the female in the video is coping with Tyler but tries to hide from him when things get heated.

This is different in the music video Dapper by Domo Genesis, that has absolutely nothing to do with the song, it is just visuals for a song with performance.

4. Since Tyler is his record label, he doesn't exactly need to meet requirements of other, unless he sets some. Yes the video is solely based around him but thats because he chose it to be that way for the sake of the story.

This is different for the music video of P.O.S by Left Brain, the video mainly focuses around the performance of the song in different locations. Left Brain is on the same label as Tyler the Creator so he also doesn't really have too much to meet, regarding requirements.

5. This music video doesn't really make any references to any other media but because the music video does feature two songs, they do link the first song in the video to the second one by merging two of the things from both videos.

Not many music videos actually make reference to other media, but the music video for Fool Wit it Freestyle by Supa Bwe (ft. Chance the Rapper) take a bow to a cartoonist/animator who created the music video.

P1)
Music ideas:

Picked Mac Miller - Objects in the mirror.

Roles:

  • Shaun - Cinematographer and Actor
  • Marco - Producer
  • Adam - Camera man
  • Tyler - Director

General Concept:

Shaun wakes up, goes downstairs make breakfast realises he’s missing ingredients and walks to the shop. Ends with microwave shot. In the video there will be two versions of the character, one that stays at home being depressed and day dreaming about being outside, and the other version actually taking place in those day dreams. This will be displayed with different colour corrections and two versions of the same shot showing two different things.

Ideas that don’t fit lyrics or not sure where to have the idea:

  • Side on shot of Shaun looking into fridge, incorporating the lip syncing, realising that nothing in there.

  • Walking past school (memories)
  • Making something in the morning and doesn't have the ingredients.
  • Walking to the shop noticing all the people and buildings around that bring back memories.
  • Shaun pours cereal box and single coco pop falls out.
  • Shaun opens fridge and sees there’s no food, empty egg cartons etc.

H & M1)
Mac Miller’s ‘Objects in the mirror’ is not exactly an offensive song and would not need to be certified into a specific time bracket so it can be played at any time for radio and TV music channels as it has no bad language although in one moment of the song the lyrics mention suicide, however this is depicted as a negative thing and is not insightful in any way the lyric that mentions suicide is:

Don't even say you about to end it all….Your life precious ain't a need to  go and kill yourself ”.

The song itself is about drugs but not once is that actually mentioned, the song actually seems like it is about a girl but Mac Miller said in an interview that it is about his prior drug addiction and drugs in general.

We will broadcast our music video on MTV, we believe it is not appropriate to view before the watershed, as the song is rated PAL.

We will also put the video on youtube, and will not age restrict the video in any way. The album as a whole is rated parental advisory (PAL), this is also the rating we have for our music video.

We asked permission to use the song, but never received a response.

Setting up equipment

DSLR Camera
To set up the camera first we check the battery life, to make sure it is full and then turn it off once we are satisfied. After this we insert the SD card and check how much storage space we have available. After turning the dial on the top to the video setting we are ready to shoot.
But not before removing the lens cap!

Tripod
When using the tripod we make sure to be mindful of our space when carrying it.
When using it we first find the spot we wish to place it, then hold it above this spot while extending the legs to the length we need and locking them in place. After we check the tripod is balanced using the spirit level, we can remove the small plate at the top of the tripod and attach it to the bottom of the camera. Then we can place the camera on the tripod. We always make sure to take the camera off if we are moving the tripod.

Shoulder Mount.
The shoulder mount came in a case and had to be assembled. The process of assembling the frame of the shoulder mount was simple. First we remove the top plate and attach the camera to it, after which we place that to one side. Then whoever is going to use the shoulder mount puts it on their shoulder, and adjusts the fit and length until it is comfortable. Then we can finally place the camera and top plate back on the shoulder mount and secure it. Now we are ready to shoot.

Flycam
The fly cam came in a case and had to be assembled. The process of assembling the frame of the flycam was more complicated. First we remove the top plate and attach the camera to it, after which we place that to one side. Then we attach the pole portion of the fly cam to a secure level surface, like a table, and then try our best to balance the weight evenly. Then once we think it’s balanced we can finally place the camera and top plate back on the fly cam and secure it. Now we are ready to shoot.

B)
Did you follow the script/storyboard?
Initially when we started filming, we followed the script and storyboard almost entirely but as we went out to reshoot, we needed to expand the narrative so we basically just changed the idea for the most part. We kept most of the footage from the first shoot because it would fit into the new narrative that we made.

C)
Did you follow safe working practices?
Yes, when we went to the locations that we were filming in, like the hill, we made sure that it wasn't slippery or if there was enough safe space to film, which there was. We also made sure that the equipment was safe at all times. For example when we did some tracking shots following the front of the character, the cameraman had to walk backwards, we made sure that another person in the group was walking and guiding them just to be sure that they didn't walk into a place we didn't want them to or fall over.

D)
The production process is generally something like 1/ ideas 2/ script 3/ storyboard, and 4/ recces 5/ filming. How did you follow this process, and what did you do differently/went wrong?
Yes, we followed the order of the production process mostly. The only difference that we made was that we did the recces and storyboard at the same time, but finished the recces first. As soon as we finished the initial paperwork, we went out to film for a test shoot,  after figuring out what we wanted to change in the script/storyboard, we did so before going out to film properly. Once we had a collection of footage we reviewed it and created a rough edit, we decided that we needed to reshoot and get more footage to improve the narrative.

E)
What genre did you decide on and what genre conventions did you use?
Because the song is quite slow and isn't like most Hip-hop songs, we decided to not go with the stereotypical genre conventions of a hip-hop video, showing off money, guns, drugs etc. Our video has some drama genre conventions, for example the depressing looks and the loneliness in the video create more of a drama look opposed to a hip -hop one.
