Ideas Sheet
Roles:
  • Shaun - Cinematographer and Actor
  • Marco - Producer
  • Adam - Camera-man
  • Tyler - Director

1 )Frank Ocean - Nights
The video will focus around a room that changes over the time of the video, as if it's going through generations of time, a character will be in the room singing. When the song reaches the second part, the room will stay in one state and the character will be standing looking at the camera singing.

2) Future - Last Breath (Second choice)
The video follows a boxer's training, in a similar vein to what you would see in a rocky movie but it cuts back and forth to this boxer visiting his wife in hospital. The video ends with the boxer winning the fight. He goes to the hospital to find his wife has passed away.

3) Earl Sweatshirt - DNA (ft Na’kel)
The video starts with two characters sat next to each other in a dark room, looking at pictures of an old friend that died. With each verse of the song the scene will switch to each character rapping towards the camera making slight movements.

4) Mac Miller - Objects in the mirror  (First Choice)
Shaun wakes up, goes downstairs make breakfast realises he’s missing ingredients and walks to the shop. Ends with microwave shot

Ideas that don’t fit lyrics or not sure where to have the idea:

  • Side on shot of Shaun looking into fridge, incorporating the lip syncing, realising that nothing in there.
  • Walking up chalk hill end.
  • Walking past school (memories)
  • Making something in the morning and doesn't have the ingredients.
  • Walking to the shop noticing all the people and buildings around that bring back memories.
  • Shaun pours cereal box and single coco pop falls out.
  • Shaun opens fridge and sees there’s no food, empty egg cartons etc.

General concept:

Shaun wakes up and tries to make breakfast, but is lacking the necessary ingredients.
His home looks disheveled and messy and the lack of ingredients adds to the depressing tone of the scene.
We then see Shaun looking at his leftovers from the night before.
We see Shaun searching around the house for some money, finding bits of spare change here and there.
And then cut to a shot of Shaun leaving the house to get some food.
Shaun walks past some houses on his way to the store, various memories coming back to him as he walks.
Shaun finally gets his eggs and pays for them, then he leaves the store.
On the way back home he finds a trail of the pictures that he was looking at at home, and follows them to the top of a nearby hill.
Once on top of the hill Shaun looks out across the field.

Music video Analysis:

Song 1: Tyler the Creator - IFHY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lDqMx4rmFU
Song 2: Maroon 5 - Payphone ft. Wiz Khalifa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRaWnd3LJfs

Similarities:
  • Story based around a male and a love interest.
  • They involve rapping as well as singing.
  • Both video are around 4 and a half minutes.
  • Both music videos have a storyline that is very clear.

Differences:
  • Tyler the Creators music video includes two songs.
  • There were a lot more scenes/locations in the Maroon 5 video.
  • The story in Maroon 5's video was a lot more complex where as Tyler's Video had the story but was a lot more simplistic.
  • There were a lot more special effects in the Maroon 5 video.
  • In the Maroon 5 video  they used a lot more camera shots.

Andrew Goodwin's Music Video Theory - Dancing in the Distraction Factory:
1. Tyler the creators music video doesn't really display the genre conventions of Hip Hop, Tyler typically likes to place a story to his music videos and it's the same for this video. Tyler made a video directly linked to the story in the song, the colours, characters, actions and setting are almost opposite to the stereo typical Hip Hop video.

Whereas videos like Norf Norf by Vince Staples, shows off the stereotype of Hip Hop artists being harassed by police for associating with gangs.

2. The music video doesn't really objectify women, but it does some what show off how the reaction women get to men that are somewhat obsessed or ones that are over reacting.

In the music video Nothin' but a G thang by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, the show off women from what they perceive them to be or what they want them to be.

3.  The song and the music video link very well, the song is about a love interest that disagrees with his idea's of love, the video is exactly the same, the female in the video is coping with Tyler but tries to hide from him when things get heated.

This is different in the music video Dapper by Domo Genesis, that has absolutely nothing to do with the song, it is just visuals for a song with performance.

4. Since Tyler is his record label, he doesn't exactly need to meet requirements of other, unless he sets some. Yes the video is solely based around him but thats because he chose it to be that way for the sake of the story.

This is different for the music video of P.O.S by Left Brain, the video mainly focuses around the performance of the song in different locations. Left Brain is on the same label as Tyler the Creator so he also doesn't really have too much to meet, regarding requirements.

5. This music video doesn't really make any references to any other media but because the music video does feature two songs, they do link the first song in the video to the second one by merging two of the things from both videos.

Not many music videos actually make reference to other media, but the music video for Fool Wit it Freestyle by Supa Bwe (ft. Chance the Rapper) take a bow to a cartoonist/animator who created the music video.

A) Production plan:

B) Resources and Equipment:
DSLR Camera
We plan on using a DSLR camera because of it’s durability, availability and versatility.  To set up the camera first we check the battery life, to make sure it is full and then turn it off once we are satisfied. After this we insert the SD card and check how much storage space we have available. After turning the dial on the top to the video setting we are ready to shoot.
But not before removing the lens cap!

Tripod
We plan on using the tripod to get still shots and pans. When using the tripod we make will sure to be mindful of our space when carrying it. When using it we first find the spot we wish to place it, then hold it above this spot while extending the legs to the length we need and locking them in place. After we check the tripod is balanced using the spirit level, we can remove the small plate at the top of the tripod and attach it to the bottom of the camera. Then we can place the camera on the tripod. We always make sure to take the camera off if we are moving the tripod.

Shoulder Mount.
We plan on using the shoulder mount because tracking shots are easier and look smoother .The shoulder mount will come in a case and has to be assembled. The process of assembling the frame of the shoulder mount is relatively simple. First we remove the top plate and attach the camera to it, after which we place that to one side. Then whoever is going to use the shoulder mount puts it on their shoulder, and adjusts the fit and length until it is comfortable. Then we can finally place the camera and top plate back on the shoulder mount and secure it. Now we are ready to shoot.

Flycam
We plan on also using the fly cam because of smooth shots it produces. The fly cam  will come in a case and also has to be assembled. The process of assembling the frame of the flycam is more complicated. First we remove the top plate and attach the camera to it, after which we place that to one side. Then we attach the pole portion of the fly cam to a secure level surface, like a table, and then try our best to balance the weight evenly. Then once we think it’s balanced we can finally place the camera and top plate back on the fly cam and secure it. Now we are ready to shoot.

Adobe Premiere and Photoshop
We plan on using adobe premiere to edit the music video, this involves piecing our footage together, colour grading, lip syncing and adding titles. The titles will be made in photoshop.

Resources:
We had a few resources at our disposal, we confirmed locations to use after scouting, the fields, houses and shop all had clearance from public use or personal confirmation, we asked the owner of the house and shop, via email or personal interaction and in the end we got permission and did not have to pay for use. The only person that would be in the video is the main singer of the song and the story would be mainly focused around him and his life, this made it easy for us as we didn’t need to hold auditions or cast many characters. To get to our locations we would need to use some form of transport, like buses, we would need to use the buses to not only move ourselves but the equipment that we would be using, we paid for transportation, equipment and the cast member with the budget money.

C) Personnel and activities:

Contingency Plan
Actor not turning up to the shoot: We have reserve actors on standby to fill in when needed if anything comes up.

A member of the crew not available for the shoot: If anyone is unavailable we will chose another day and/or time to shoot or we will carry on and do what we can without them.

Trouble with getting equipment: If we cannot get the equipment we need then we will re-schedule our shoot and wait until the equipment is free for us to use.

Getting actors: We are not going to hire actors for our shoot, instead we are going to use a member of our production crew to act and if not we will use a different member of the crew.

Having to re-shoot in different lighting: If we have to shoot again and the lighting is different then we will do what we can and then look over the footage and see if we can change it through colour grading on Adobe Premiere. If not we will re-shoot again.

Equipment losing battery: We will have spare batteries with us for each piece of equipment so that we are able to deal with the problem of the batteries dying.
Not enough room on the memory cards: We will shoot as much as we can and if we use up all the space on the memory card we will have another card with us as a back up.

Other people being at our shoot location: We are shooting in public locations and therefore there is a big chance of other people being there, we will only shoot when no one is around and if someone is in the way we will wait until they have gone.

Any interfering noises: Any sound that is caught by the microphone on the camera will not be a problem as we will not be using the audio, and instead replacing it with the music

D) Budget:
Our budget for the music video ‘Mac Miller, Object in the Mirror’ is not a big budget, we are planning to have a budget of £20 because we do not need to pay for any equipment because that has been provided to us from Long Road Sixth Form College, we also do not have to pay for any actors as we are only using one actor which is in our production group anyway. The only things we would need to pay for out of our budget is props to use in the video, we do not need to pay for the locations and sets that we are using to film in because we have checked with the owners of the locations who have given permission for us to use it for free.

E) Relevant legal and ethical issues:
